Soprano

Biography

American Soprano Karen Vuong is currently in Frankfurt at Oper Frankfurt, where she’s been a part of the ensemble since 2013/14. She was an inaugural member and two-year participant in Los Angeles Opera’s prestigious Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program, a program designed to support the future of opera by discovering and developing exceptionally gifted young artists. During the 2018/19 season, Karen sings the title roles in Rusalka, Almirena in Rinaldo, 1st Lady in Die Zauberflöte, Mercédès in Carmen, Siegrune in Die Walküre and Criside in a new production of Maderna's Satyricon.

Other recent roles include the Countess in Die Hochzeit des Figaro/Le nozze di Figaro, Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel, Agata in a new production of Fioravanti's La cantatrici villane, Imelda in concert performances of Oberto, Nella / Suor Genovieffa in Gianni Schicchi, Gerhilde in Die Walküre, the title role in Rusalka (a triumphant role debut) and Micaëla in the stunning new production of Carmen.

During the 2016/17 season she sang in a new production of Mozart's Betulia liberata, 1st Lady in Die Zauberflöte, Micaëla in Carmen, the young girl in Eötvös' Der Goldene Drache/The Golden Dragon and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Other roles for the company have included Mimì (La Bohème), Mrs. Julian (Owen Wingrave), a Flower Maiden (Parsifal) and Donna Elvira (role debut) in Don Giovanni. Karen Vuong made her debuts with Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) at Santa Barbara Opera, Trang / Nurse, in the world premiere of Daron Hagen's Amelia at Seattle Opera and Sophie (Massenet's Werther) at Kentucky Opera.

This young singer received a scholarship from the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program run by Los Angeles Opera, where she has appeared in several productions. She studied at the Juilliard School in New York where she received the Novick Career Grant, and has enjoyed great success at competitions including the Eastern Regional Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions, Operalia and the Marilyn Horne Lieder Competition.
